Why it was built

Built for a neighborhood bar or izakaya that runs on regulars, late hours and happy hour. The site has to put the whole menu in readable text, make the happy hour times plain and take table requests sized to the party.

The sample business

A small izakaya on Sawtelle Boulevard with a counter, a few tables and a charcoal grill that goes until midnight on weekends. Regulars come for skewers, sake and the happy hour, so the site has a page for each and a request form that suggests the counter, a table or the long table by party size.

What the site does

  • Lists the full menu in three tabs, skewers, small plates, and sake and drinks, with Japanese names
  • Charts the week's opening hours and both happy hours, with tonight marked in California time
  • Shows a real photo of a dish when you point at it, or under the row on a phone
  • Takes reservation requests and suggests the counter, a table or the long table for the party size
  • Gives directions, parking and buses on a drawn map, plus hours and menu data for search

Pages

  • Home — the grill opening, a short intro, three ways into the menu, happy hour times and the address
  • Menu — skewers, small plates, and sake and drinks in tabs, with Japanese names and dish photos
  • Happy Hour — the week's hours and both happy hours on one chart, tonight marked, and what is on it
  • Reservations — a request form that suggests the counter, a table or the long table by party size
  • Directions — a drawn map, parking, buses and how to spot the door

How it moves

  • The grill comes up out of the dark as the page opens, and the brush-written name is uncovered
  • Smooth scrolling, headings that rise line by line, photos that drift slower than the page
  • A vermilion line slides between the menu tabs, and the dish photo follows the cursor

Who it suits

  • Izakayas, yakitori bars and sake bars
  • Korean pochas and soju bars
  • Gastropubs and wine bars with a happy hour
  • Small late-night restaurants with a counter and a few tables

Make it yours

Swap in your name, logo, photos, menu and prices, hours, happy hour and address. Connect your domain; the reservation requests can go to your email, and the takeout button can be connected to your ordering link. You could also add a private party page for the long table.

  • Use it as isYour name, logo, photos and details go in, your domain is connected, and it opens with this design.
  • Build on itKeep what works for you and we change the rest around your business: layout, colors, pages and features.

The business is fictional: names, addresses and phone numbers are samples. The site itself works as you see it.
